10 Years

A new year, a new decade and for Steve Price of Plan-B Studio, one big anniversary. You know the deal, birthday celebrations seem to go on for a week these days. A party here, drinks there, dinner with them. But this is not just about an event in October(!).

Not being content with celebrating Plan-B Studio’s tenth birthday on the official day (July 31st), Steve Price has set himself a rather big challenge for the coming months; 10 projects/collaborations in the next 10 months with 10 NFP/NGO organisations. Culminating in an exhibition celebrating the work, the process and the people involved, along with a book and a very special event with guest speakers on October 10th 2010 (yes it is a Sunday).

Memories: George Webster by Steve Price
Garrwick Webster has invited me to create a piece for a beautiful book called
‘Memories’. Th e result will be a beautiful art book where powerful and touching
stories will be accompanied by visual responses from artists and designers alike.
Proceeds from the sales of Memories will go to the charity: Maggie’s Cancer
Caring Centres.

I decided for my submission I needed to get y hands dirty. More importantly I wanted to expose myself a little bit (I am not great at drawing or painting), just as the prose does from the writers point of view. My piece is to accompany Garrwicks own piece about his father; no pressure then!

I created a 300mm x 400mm canvas which I built up using layers. Each layer representing a characteristic of his father which was lightly white washed to symbolise the cancer white washing certain characteristics. Here's a video showing the whole process of me making the canvas can be seen here:

Project10 - April Newspaper (Ladies issue)
Rather than send out press releases to promote his endeavour, I had the bright idea of using the Newspaper Club to create a limited-edition mailout to 100 industry people. The content, appropriately, is contributed for free by friends; peers, designers, artists, illustrators and other creatives, all under the theme of collaboration.

For April's 'Ladies' issue I asked some leading ladies to contribute, and boy did they. From Singapore based creative director Fanny Khoo, to a joint 'twitter-interview' from Camilla Grey with Panja Gobel, an interview with Alexa Meade, and other pieces from Nicky Gibson, Katie Marcus, Taragh Basset and Nicola Rowsell and even design Week's very own Emily Pacey. Illustrations by Emma Jane Barrett nicely sealed off this issue with a piece on the cover by Nick Schmitz (admitedly not a lady, but a damn fine gent for contributing his poignant 'You, Me, Awesome' piece. You can read more about it here: designweak.com or download the pdf issue here.

The next issue (May) will look at design in Politics - rather timely I feel.

June's issue will be dedicated to the New (designer/graduate) Blood. I would like to promote ten new graduates and celebrate the best of the design industries newbies. Applicants will not just be selected on their work. Oh no. In order to get yourself and your work in to the paper you must (off your own back) source, organise and interview your design industry hero for the paper SPECIFICALLY about the notion of collaboration in today's industry.

Successful applicants will supply up to 500 words of interview, images to support the interview and/or examples of their own work. Deadline for the above is Friday 21st May 2010.

Project10 - March Newspaper (Launch issue)

Around the middle of February I got an email from Ben Terrett. I was lucky enough to get a beta account for their superb Newspaper Club. A light bulb burst in to light above my head. ‘Perfect!’ I decided.

You see for January/February I spent days putting together beautiful press release emails to promote what I was doing. I can see from my tracking reports who took any notice and with the offer of Newspaper Club I decided my time would be better spent taking my press releases out the inbox and in to a 12page, black and white printed newspaper.

This month see’s articles by Matthew Knight, Daljit Singh, Shane RJ Walter, Simon White, and responses to my ‘5 x Questions/4 x Pioneers’ from the likes of Nik Roope, Chantelle Fiddy. Not to mention kind donations of illustrations from Mr Bingo and Alec Strang.

I am going to be publishing this once a month. If you would like a copy, and if there are some left (I am only printing one copy) you can email me here for a copy, but these are for promotional use only so you will need to blog about it. Not trying to twist your arm, just being honest.
