The
Laurence King 'K'
..................................................................
Having had a new logo designed by Vince Frost I was asked to work
on a number of projects that tackled developing their new identity.
The first project was to design a poster(1),
something typographical, for an in-store promotion aimed at students
going back to college/university.
I commissioned Alex Taylor to have a five foot model of their logo
and the 'K' was born. We shot it all over London in various situations,
shops and places of recognition.
The architecture(2)
and graphics (3) Postalogue™
were perfectly shot on a hot July morning down accross the river
from the city skyline and then at Magma bookstore.
For me developing the brand was more than just trying to use a vector
shaped logo, it was about taking the LKP identity and placing it
in to actual places and spaces.
I could have hired a 3-d artist to attempt this but the fact that
we actively made a real structure out of the logo only added to
the overall presence and impact of each piece.
The life of the five foot K ended soon after these shoots disappearing
from a well known bookstore window (I kid you not), but its popularity
grew rapidly especially in the far-eastern markets where stockists
and distributors at bookfairs were actively contacting LKP to find
out what we were doing next with the K.
